Biochemistry: “Decoding Life’s Molecular Blueprint”

The fulcrum of the subject rests on the understanding all biological processes. It enlightens core areas like Cell Biology, Physiology, Metabolism, Genetics & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Bioinformatics, Clinical Biochemistry, Nutritional Science, Environmental Science, Pharmacology and others. It forms the basis for practical advances in medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology.

Biochemistry is also unique in providing teaching and research in both protein and genetic engineering, the two basic components of the rapidly expanding field of biotechnology. The multifaceted nature of the subject and recent advances in these areas have created links among technology, chemical engineering, and biochemistry.

At Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Biochemistry as an Under-Graduate subject was introduced in 1999 under Chemistry Department and was established as a discreet Department of Biochemistry in 2004. The Department has well-equipped Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate laboratories to facilitate experimental learning. It comprises of young dynamic faculty members who keep themselves updated to cater to the upcoming industrial demands.

The syllabus at both Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate level is tailored for the cohesive & holistic development of the students. It is aligned to prepare students for various competitive-exams and has project-based learning approach to nurture research acumen. The Department motivates students to do internship at esteemed industries to introduce them to the corporate world. It also offers employability-oriented Certificate Course in Food Science and Quality Control.

Activities of the Department

The department organizes annual signature festival ‘Appetisers’. In Appetisers, 10 to 12 food based themes are given to students in groups. Students from all classes (FYBSc to MSc II) are placed in one group. On the day of Appetisers, Students explain charts and working models made by them to give an insight into their themes. They serve delicious and nutritious recipes prepared by them, present them and explain its health benefits. Fun games are also arranged. Eminent personalities are invited as the Chief Guest for the event to motivate students and present real life examples in front of them. Parents, Teacher colleagues and students from other departments attend the event. Students not only enjoy this activity very much but also it helps them learn many life skills such as developing Teamwork and Collaborations, Enhancing Social and Emotional Learning, Improving Risk Analysis and troubleshooting, Entrepreneurship etc.

Message from Head of Department

The department of Biochemistry is a big family where all my staff members, alumni, students and their parents are integral part of it. Since all teachers teach all classes, teacher: student ratio is appropriate and personal attention to individual student is possible. Depending upon the situation, we have always tried to play different roles in our student’s life like friends, guide, mentor and sometimes, even parents. We have always focused on the overall development of the students. The department has always been exemplary with its academic results and I can proudly say that our students have good Emotional quotient and Social quotient which is very important in today’s world.
