ABOUT DEPARTMENT

The Department of English was founded in 1937, right from the establishment of the college. In the past, distinguished academics like Jnyanpeeth Awardee Prof. V. D. Karandikar, Prof. V. M. Paranjape, Dr. K. Pakrasi, Prof. K. Shri Kumar, Indian English poet Prof. I. M. Jayakar, eminent Marathi writer and translator Prof. Sadanand Rege and recently retired a renowned faculty and head Dr. Anjali Bhelande have enriched the Department, creating  a strong tradition of excellence.

The Department aims at an interdiscplinary approach to Literary Studies with inclusive teaching learning process. Because of the academic autonomy the department has been engaged in implementing new structured syllabus aided with extra curricular activities. At the department, we have activities like Reader's Club, An Interdisciplinary Study group and Cinephiles (a film club) to encourage students to explore potential areas in Literature studies.  The Dept. sometimes runs a UGC sponsored Course in Remedial English. Moreover, it hosts an annual inter-collegiate literary festival entitled ‘Mad Hatters’. It also has a Wall-magazine entitled ‘Literati’ which displays students’ creative writing in English.

The Dept inaugurated its Language Lab in 2014-15. Since then, it has been offering sessions on speaking, reading and writing skills.

The Dept. has its own Departmental Library which has over 600 books. It tries to inculcate a research culture among students through the use of this library and guidance by Faculty. We encourage students to make creative posters and research-based presentations at Seminars.
