About the Department
The Department of Marathi was started with the establishment of the college 1937. 

The First Head of the Department was Prof. N.R.Phatak. Stalwarts like Famous Poet Vasant Bapat, Prof.V.S.Valimbe, Famous Critic Shri. Pu. Bhagwat, Dr. Sarojini Vaidya, Great Thinker and Social Activist Pushpa Bhave, Prof.Meena Gokhale, etc. enriched the Department.

 Marathi Vangmai Mandal (Marathi Literary Association), Prof. N. R. Phatak Memorial ProgrammeProf.Shri.Pu.Bhagwat Memorial Programme and Celebration of Marathi Bhasha Din are regular Activities of the Department.

Apart from these activities Marathi Vadsabha is headed by the Department. We conduct prestigious Prof.G.D.Parikh State Level Intercollegiate Elocution Competition every year.

 Vishnushashtri Chiplunkar Memorial Lecture Series is a unique activity Commenced since 1974 initiated by Prof.VasantBapat. Special features of the series are as follows : 

  • Same Schedule since inception i.e. 23rd, 24th and 25th January
  • Topics from all the Spheres of life(Social, Political, Economic, Educational, Environmental, Cultural, etc.)
  • Renowned Experts invited to speak (Justice ChandrashekharDharmadhikari, Scientist Dr.JayantNaralikar, KishoritaiAmonkar, Dr.AchyutGodbole, Former Vice Chancellor Dr.BhalchandraMungekar, Director of N.S.D.
