The Centre for Slum Studies is established by Ramnarain Ruia College, Mumbai in 2002-2003. Ø Conduct of Academic Courses for under Graduate and Post Graduate Students including Seminars, Workshops and Conferences for Government Employees, NGOs, and Citizens. Ø Academic Research in Urban Poverty and Slums. Ø Implementation of Pilot Projects in the area of Urban Poverty and Slums The then urban development Minister for state in Government of India Hon. O. Rajgopal has inaugurated the course.

The programme was arranged on 19th to 22nd July 2006.in Ruia College. The topics were: · Know your City, · ‘CCSS’ Avenues for slum social work · ‘CCFAHA’ Preventive Health Care · ‘CCRD’, Importance of research and documentation · CCWMEC’ Importance of energy conservation‘ · CCCWPD’ Importance of Personality and Communication‘ · CCWMEC’ Importance of solid waste management Focus was mainly on under-Graduate Students between the age group of 17 – 20. Ø Part time Post Graduate Diploma Course in Slum Studies and Development (DCSSD). University level Ø November 25, 2006, a Personality Development workshop done for the NCC students as well as 11th & 12th Std. student of Ruia College was done in the month of October, 2006. Ø December 26, 2006, celebrated Solid Waste Management Day in Ruia College, which includes various games organized to collect the garbage with respect to Waste Donation for the CSS.
WORKSHOPS FOR COMMUNITY STUDENTS: - Ø SJSRY Groups in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation & Badalapur Mahanagarpalika Ø 5 Training workshops of SJSRY groups skill building & Internal Marketing System in Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation and Badalapur Mahanagarpalika Ø A two-day workshop on 23rd & 24th January 2006 organized at Badalapur Mahanagarpalika on SJSRY Internal Marketing System Ø Disaster Management Workshop for Dattak Vasti Yojana candidates & SJSRY Groups
· SJSRY group workshop was conducted on 31st May 2006 in Kurla, 75 to 80 women’s participated in the workshop · One-Day Training Workshop organized on Mithi River - Outside Slum pocket NGOs and CBOs working under Slum Sanitation Programme on 24th July at Ruia College, Auditorium, and Matunga. 75 persons / representatives from (Dattak Vasti Yojana & CBOs) participated. Ø Personality Development Workshop in Maharashtra High School The programme arranged on 7th to 9th September 2006. The main objective was: · To initiate them to achieve academic progress · To create self dignity · To create self confidence The topics were: · Know Yourself, · Goal Setting and Planning, · Art of Listening · Communication Skills · Time Management · Way to Success Ø Slum Adoption Programme – Community Based Organizations Peer Training Project On 18th December 06, first batch started under Certificate Course in Waste Management. Now, we are planning to provide training to around 650 representatives of CBOs in association with Ruia College, United Ways of Mumbai and MCGM.
Ø Kumbarwada Survey in Dharavi area Ø Research Study on Poverty Centric City Profile: - We have collected data for slums and poverty for every ward in Mumbai and analyzed it to find status of basic infrastructure, primary health provisions, available for arranged a survey of S Ward slum area from the month of April 2006 onwards and showing the status of the people living in the area and to analyze the schemes introduced by central / state govt. We are working on the data collected through survey.
FUTURE PLANS: - Ø We intend to expand and introduce in all over India through the help of All India Local self Government, YASHADA and other such institutes and establish Ruia College as prominent institute in the area of Urban Environment Management (UEM). Ø We planned to start Urban Poverty Research Projects with our students who have academic interest in this field.
