Herbal Research Laboratory
In 1983, the Ramnarain Ruia College formally commissioned the S. P. Mandali's Industrial Coordination Centre, now popularly known as the Herbal Research Lab (HRL). Mr. Sushilkumar Shinde, the then minister of Finance, Maharashtra State, India, inaugurated the laboratory on 23rd November 1983. This Lab was set up as Industry interaction had increased, and a separate facility was needed to house more sophisticated instruments and infrastructure so that industry and academia could interact more meaningfully. Industry based projects are coordinated from HRL. The highly specialized infrastructure of the HRL is strengthened to carry out research on herbal and ASU formulations using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) with densitometric scanner, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Flash Chromatography, Fourier Transformed - Infra Red (FT-IR) and UV- Visible Spectroscopy.
Dr. Sunita Shailajan is the head of the Herbal Research Lab (HRL). HRL plans to convert some herbal preparations into their appropriate pharmaceutical dosage forms and subject these formulations to shelf-life studies. HRL conducts bioavailability studies of phytochemical markers on animals.
Working/Training model At HRL, students registered for Ph.D. in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry and Bio-analytical Sciences actively participate in Industrial and Government funded projects. These research students complete Industrial projects as a part of their regular duties. HRL derives income mainly from these projects and pays the students a stipend. It also supports them till completion of their research work both financially and by providing access to instruments. The students' research publications reflect the interdisciplinary and holistic approach that HRL employs to implement projects.
Facilities at HRL HRL has a wet lab and a mezzanine Instrumentation lab. All the basic facilities required for Phytochemical analysis, standardization of herbal formulations, Ayurvedic, Siddha & Unani (ASU) experimentations and carrying out animal studies are available. Instruments at HRL
