
The Department of English was founded with the establishment of Ruia College
in 1937. In the past, distinguished academicians like Jnyanpeeth awardee Prof.
V. D. Karandikar, eminent Marathi writer and translator Prof. Sadanand Rege,
Indian English poet Prof. I.M. Jayakar, Prof. V. M. Paranjape, Dr. K. Pakrasi,
and Prof. K. SriKumar have enriched the Department and created a strong
tradition of excellence.


The Department is currently headed by Dr. Anjali Bhelande. Dr. Bhelande is an
eminent scholar in the field of English Language and Literature. She is the
author of three books and several articles that have been published in national
and international journals. She won the Graduate Student Award and the Faculty
Research Fellowship instituted by the Government of Canada for doctoral and
post-doctoral research respectively. Her areas of research-interest are
feminism, spiritual philosophy and stylistics. She is currently involved in the
editing and publication of the educative and meaningful works of Indian mystic
Dada Gavand.

The Department of English has published a Handbook of Communication Skills
besides creating a large body of innovative language teaching material, which is
used to train our students in Communication Skills in English. For students of
Literature, the Department has an exclusive library and several innovative
teaching aids that include CDs, films and pictures. In the unique ambience of
Ruia’s English Department, literature is a subject to be lived, experienced and
enjoyed to the fullest.


The English Literary Associationorganizes several activities in order to help
students understand and critically appreciate language, literature, the arts and
the media. These include:

Workshops in Creative Writing, Communication Skills Journalism and Mass
Communication
Film and Theatre
Some of the distinguished guests who have visited the Department in recent years
include acclaimed novelist Kiran Nagarkar, poets Arundhati Subramanian and Jerry
Pinto, Canadian poets Patricia Keeney and Penny Kemp, versatile writer Eunice de
Souza, Israeli actor-director Gil Alon, Kathak exponent Ashok Ketkar and
filmmaker Sankalp Meshram.
