Background

Department of Commerce was started in 1979 to let the students of Arts take ‘Commerce’ as an optional paper and learn basics of commerce. These papers do not contain any accounts, maths or statistics to make it easier option for students. ‘Commerce’ subject as an option for Arts students was initiated by Mumbai University to expand the career horizon of the students from Arts stream. Presently it is offered by only 6 to 7 colleges in Mumbai and this subject is also largely opted for by students from correspondence courses offered by Mumbai University. Accordingly, at the TYBA level, a student can take three papers of Commerce and three papers of Economics respectively for their graduation degree.

Papers taught under ‘Commerce’ subject option under Arts stream:

Activities of Department of Commerce in 2006-07:

Commerce department conducted a study tour on 16th October 06 for TYBA students to “Bhandup Industrial Estate”. It was conducted to have practical knowledge about small scale industries which students are learning as theory paper VI titled ‘Management of Small Scale Industries’ as part of syllabus. Companies engaged in businesses viz. Plastic products, Printing press, Punching industry, Punch making industry, Socks making industry, Chocolate making industry etc, were visited.
 


Faculty Achievements in 2006-07:

Miss Urmila Prasad, Head of dept. of Commerce, presented following papers:

1. Presented a Paper titled ‘Emerging BPOs and ITes – An Indian Advantage’ on 30th Sept & 1st Oct. 2006 at a two –day State Level Seminar on “Changing Scenario in Higher Education& other Services Sector with special reference to GATS” at PEN Education Society’s Bhausaheb Nene Arts, Science & Commerce College, Pen-Raigad.

2. Presented a Paper titled ‘Human Capital in India’s ITES/BPO sector – HR Challenges and Initiatives” at National Level Seminar conducted by M.E.S. College of Arts and Commerce, Goa, on 15th/16th December 2006, titled “Human Capital In India’s Services Sector – Issues and Perspectives”.


 Miss Urmila Prasad, Head of department of commerce was appointed as a Visiting Faculty Lecturer to teach the following papers :
• MBA (Correspondence) Course (Paper titled ‘Personnel Management’ and ‘Marketing Management’) of Second Year- MBA Course of University of Madras conducted at Bansidhar Agarwal Junior college, Wadala.
• B.M.M. Course - Paper titled ‘Principles of Marketing’ of First Year BMM of University of Mumbai, conducted at Ramnarain Ruia college.

 Achievement of Students (Department of Commerce) in 2006-07:

Shilpa Sathe, Ruta Joshi,and Niki Patel, students from SYBA commerce class made a power point presentation on the topic “IMPORTANCE OF GLAMOUR IN THE AD WORLD” and won 1st prize trophy in a presentation competition in an inter-collegiate event held in titled ‘GYAN MANTHAN 2006’, organized by the ROYAL COLLEGE, Mira Road.

RUIA COMMERCE ASSOCIATION

(An association affiliated to department):
It was established in the year 1998-1999 to focus on overall development of students of commerce. The aims and objectives of this association are as follows:
1. To enhance student’s personality and provide a platform to learn organizing skills.
2. To learn recent happenings in business and marketing world.
3. To create awareness about the various career options available.
4. To instill and enhance Leadership, Communication and Management skills.

Activities conducted by the Ruia Commerce Association in 2006-07:

1. Miss Urmila Prasad, Head of dept. of commerce conducted a three-hour workshop on 9th September 2006 on “Making Meetings work” for S.Y.B.A. class.

2. Prof. Kawaljit Singh, Lecturer in Marketing at Sasmira Institute, Worli, delivered a talk on Marketing strategies taking a case study of AMUL India, on 14th Sept.2006.

3. On 15th September 2006, an Intra-collegiate Elocution competition was conducted. It was judged by Prof Devayani Ganpule from Economics department and Feona Fernandes , Assistant Editor Disney World Magazine. There were in all 11 participants. Topics for the Elocution were ‘Marketing in Financial service sector’ , ‘Organized Retail in India’ , ‘Booming Insurance sector’ , ‘HRM – A shift towards spirituality’ , ‘Outsourcing – An Indian advantage’. Kirti Rathi from F.Y.B.A. ,Shilpa Sathe from S.Y.B.A. won the Ist and IInd prize respectively , while IIIrd prize was shared by Aditi Daksh from F.Y.B.A. and Sudatta Dasgupta from S.Y.B.A.

4. Miss Urmila Prasad, Head of dept. of commerce, conducted a three-hour workshop on 23rd Sept.2006 on “Business Communication” which involved how to write Business letters, Faxes and Emails . The workshop was conducted for S.Y.B.A class.

5. On 23rd November 2006, An AD-Making competition was held which was judged by Mr. Ajay Lele from the world of Advertising. There were in all 8 teams consisting of 3 members each. Products for the Role-play were Credit card, Paints, Sarees, Winter wear, Hair styling gel, Age-defying cream, Airlines Ready-to-eat food. Ist prize winners were from F.Y.B.A. - Amrita Datar , Aparna Krishna and Cyril Frank. IInd prize winners were from F.Y.B.A. – Kirti Rathi , Ruchi Mehta and Nikita Bajaj. And IIIrd prize winners were also from F.Y.B.A. – Pratibha Nambiar, Nikita Aggarwal and Ramaa Medar. At the end, jugde gave a talk on Advertising, different careers in it and its related topics.

6. On 27th November 2006, a talk on Capital market was conducted by Mr. Rajesh Dedhia , director of Vantage corporate services ltd. He explained on various technicalities of Stock Exchange. It was a good and interactive session on various aspects of Stock Exchange.

7. An AD-Quiz competition was held on 1st December 2006. There were in all 6 teams participating for the competition .Out of which 4 teams were qualified for the finals after the Preliminary round. There were 6 rounds for the finals : Identify the logo , Brand name, Speak the slogan , Segment ads , Ek ka Do round and Endorsement ads. Ist prize was won by Hemant Yadav and Mohit Lal, IInd prize was won by Sneha Kulkarni and Neha Kamat.
