DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

Year of Establishment: August 2002

Faculty : The Department of Biotechnology is self-sufficient with respect to its teaching and non-teaching requirements. It has five full-time faculty members in the teaching and four members in the non-teaching category.

COURSES OFFERED :  B.Sc. in Biotechnology (6 Units).
With intake capacity of 35 students at the First Year level which will follow the Second and the Third years of the course

TEACHING-LEARNING PROCESS : The Department is well equipped with its own portable OHP (overhead projector), Laptop, Desktop computers and LCD projector. Hence, the majority of the lectures are in the form of transparencies and PowerPoint presentations.

The teaching-learning process involves quiz rounds, open questions and an unrestricted access at any time to teachers to solve any doubt. The students are encouraged to give seminars on topics from / related to their syllabi.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT : The department has its own association called the ‘BAR’ (Biotechnology Association of Ruia) that was incepted in August 2006 by Dr. S. K. Mahajan – Gharda Professor in Biotechnology, Institute of Science, Mumbai. The association holds its meetings on every Saturday in the first half the year with activities ranging from talks by eminent people in Biotechnology to debates, students presentations etc.

The Department encourages the students to participate in various activities arranged by the department, by other departments in the college and other colleges also. This helps the student to understand what is going on the field of biotechnology around them.

TEACHERS PARTICIPATION : The staff of the Department of Biotechnology believe that the teacher is an eternal student and hence make every effort is made to attend seminars, conferences and workshops arranged by various colleges and educational institutions.

Besides these, the teachers have participated in various training programs that make the teachers up-to-date with the recent innovations in teaching.

STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENTS : The students of the department have brought laurels to the department. Many students are pursuing their M.Sc & Ph.D. programs in Biotechnology in various universities in India and abroad.

FUTURE PLANS : The Department has a vision of becoming the temple of learning biotechnology. In the near future, it plans to introduce the M.Sc. program in Biotechnology; both by research as well as by papers.

The Department also plans to introduce basic courses in biotechnology for students of biological and non-biological sciences with specializations in different areas such as recombinant DNA technology, bioprocess technology, plant tissue culture, animal tissue culture etc.
