The Department of Bioanalytical Sciences
About the Course:
The course - a two years Masters Program - was started in the year 2004 under the scheme of UGC assistance for
implementing innovative programs. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
The Ramnarain Ruia College was the first to start this pragmatic and contemporary course.
Every year, 20 students, selected through a common entrance test, are
admitted into the program. The course is currently being run under the Chemistry
Department.
Objectives of the Course:
1) Develop trained manpower for exploitation of Ayurveda-Siddha-Unani (ASU) system
of medicine and for modern pharmaceutical industries
2) Amalgamate traditional analytical techniques with modern
genomic and proteomic
technologies
3) Introduce tools of informatics in manufacturing, QC and research
4) Exposure to national and international regulatory affairs with reference to
drugs
Eligibility:
All students who have completed their
Bachelors in any subject but have had Chemistry as a subject till the 12+2 level
are eligible to register for the Entrance Test. The Entrance Test is usually
held in June-July. 20 students are selected for the course every year. We plan
to increase the uptake in the coming years.
The Coursework
For Part I:
Paper I : Medicinal Systems, Pharmacognosy and Extraction Techniques
Paper II : Patents, Drug Act and Quality Management Intellectual Property Rights, GCP
Paper II : Chromatography and Spectroscopy
Paper IV : Proteomics, Bioinformatics and Stability Studies
For Part II:
Paper V : Basic Microbiology, Genomics, Capillary Electrophoresis and Toxicology
Paper VI : MS Applications, Metabolite Studies, Thermal analysis and Tracer Techniques
Paper VII : Standardization of ASU Drugs, Statistics and GMP
Paper VIII : BA/BE Studies, GCP and Method Validation
Practicals:
Actual hands-on experience is provided on methodologies and techniques like:
-- TLC,HPLC, GC
-- Infrared spectroscopy, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Mass Spectroscopy
-- Bioinformatics
-- DNA Extraction, Purification, RFLP, Sequencing
-- Protein Electrophoresis
-- BA-BE studies
As a mandatory part of the
practicals, Part II students have to undergo compulsory 6-8 weeks industrial
training, while Part I students are taken on several
industrial and field visits
to industrial and research establishments.
Performance uptil now:
The Department is a relatively new
department. Hence, there is an enormous scope for development. However, the
success of the course and the department can still be judged from the fact that
out of the 20 students of our first batch which passed out of the course in 2006, 16 have
already got
placements in reputed industries like:
1) Bharat Serum
2) Sitec Cipla
3) US Vitamins
4) Glenmark
5) Lupin
6) BASF
7) FDC
8) IPCA
9) Natural Remedies
10) Centor Pharma
and one student has decided to pursue doctoral studies.
We have also been able to establish a
good Industry-College interaction through the Industrial Training and Industrial
Visits, which are mandatory requirements of the course.
