History

The Department of History was established in Ramnarain Ruia College in 1937. Since its inception, along with academics, it has excelled in establishing co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Guest lectures by eminent scholars, study tours, workshops and seminars are regularly held by the department to engage students beyond classroom learning. Every year, the Department hosts ‘Mudra’, a widely known intercollegiate festival that showcases talents of students, the best in history, arts, dramatics and literature from various colleges. The prestigious, ‘Prof. D.D. Kosambi Memorial Lecture’ is also hosted annually to facilitate a clear insight into the complexity of historical research. A well-established Ph. D. Research Centre and a resourceful Departmental library further invigorates this research culture. As a result, our students present research papers in conferences and seminars and are recipients of research fellowships. The Department also conducts skill-based workshops and certificate courses in Food history, Archival management and Heritage of Mumbai.

Message from Head of Department

The Department of History, established in 1937 is located in a sprawling environment with renowned faculty actively involved in research and teaching. Over the years, the department has evolved to offer undergraduate courses and doctoral programmes in relatively new areas of research like Environmental History, Culinary History, Genealogy, Labour History, Dalit movement and Modern India. It is my utmost priority to see that the department strives to provide a conducive environment for students to develop trans-disciplinary, analytical and practical skills and thus compete at the national and global level. Therefore, we, at the department, try to focus on connecting the history syllabi with contemporary challenges to make history learning application based. To do so, we also organize different skill-based courses and workshops like Archival Management, Food history and Heritage of Mumbai so that students can chart out a path to academia, entrepreneurship and social change.
